The monthly “Statistical Survey of Specific Service Industries” conducted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry found that in February sales per pachinko/pachislot machine in the roughly 1,200 parlors surveyed were JPY301,000 (US$2,760), or about 75.2 percent of the 2020 figure.
Restaurants and bars were required to close by 8 pm, while the 2nd state of emergencies, from 8th January till 21st March. But pachinko parlors had not been asked to close early. Nevertheless, sales have never recovered.
In October 2020, sales per game machine recovered 83.6 percent of the same month of the previous year.
However, after that, sales declined as some kind of pachislot machines which had been breadwinners were removed from parlors. The industry is forced to continue to remove them out because the specifications of those machines do not conform to the current regulations.
